10 Things You Need to Know Before Moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma

Are you thinking about moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma? Whether you’re relocating for work, family, or just a fresh start, there are a few essential things you should know before you pack your bags. From the cost of living in Tulsa to local politics, culture, and laws, this guide will give you an honest look at life in this vibrant Midwest city.

I’m Steven, the 918 Agent, a local Tulsa real estate expert, and I’m here to break down the facts—both the pros and cons—so you can make an informed decision.

1. Cost of Living in Tulsa

One of the biggest reasons people move to Tulsa is affordability. The cost of living in Tulsa is lower than the national average, making it a great place to buy a home, start a business, or save for the future.

To give you an idea, a three-bedroom, two-bath home in Tulsa typically costs around $200,000. Compared to major cities like Dallas, Austin, or Denver, housing costs here are very reasonable.

2. Political Views and Climate

Oklahoma is a traditionally Republican (red) state, and Tulsa reflects that overall political leaning. In the 2020 election, all Oklahoma counties voted Republican. However, Tulsa itself is more balanced politically than the surrounding areas.

  • About 150,000 registered Republicans
  • Around 110,000 registered Democrats

This mix means you’ll find diverse viewpoints, especially in the city compared to the suburbs like Broken Arrow, Owasso, Sand Springs, and Sapulpa, which lean more conservative.

3. How Tulsa Handled COVID-19

During the pandemic, Tulsa implemented phased reopening plans and was one of the few Oklahoma cities to enforce a mask mandate.

Key dates to know:

  • State shutdown began April 1, 2020
  • Phase 1 reopening started April 23, 2020
  • Phase 2 began May 15, reopening bars and events at limited capacity
  • Phase 3 launched June 1, lifting more restrictions

Mask mandates were active through April 2021. While enforcement was relatively relaxed, it’s good to know the city took health measures seriously.

4. Marijuana and Alcohol Laws

Medical marijuana is legal in Oklahoma, and it’s very accessible in Tulsa. With a valid medical card (easy to obtain), you can:

  • Have up to 8 oz at home
  • Carry 3 oz on you
  • Grow up to 6 mature plants

You’ll see dispensaries on nearly every corner.

Alcohol laws have modernized:

  • Wine and high-point beer are sold in gas stations and grocery stores
  • Hard liquor must be purchased from liquor stores (open Mon–Sat, typically until 9 p.m.)

5. Faith and Churches

Tulsa is in the heart of the Bible Belt, often called the “belt buckle” of it. If you’re looking for a church, you’ll have plenty of options—there’s practically one on every corner.

Popular churches in Tulsa include:

  • Transformation Church, led by Pastor Michael Todd
  • Life.Church, a multi-campus church with virtual services and Pastor Craig Groeschel

6. Gun Laws

Oklahoma is an open carry state with some of the most permissive gun laws in the country.

  • No permit is needed for open carry if you’re a legal adult and not prohibited by law
  • Concealed carry also doesn’t require a license (since 2019)
  • Guns are restricted in certain places like schools, banks, and government buildings

7. Tulsa Crime Rates

Tulsa has higher-than-average crime rates, something newcomers are often surprised to learn.

While many neighborhoods are safe and family-friendly, it’s essential to research areas carefully before you buy or rent.

8. Local Culture and Arts

If you love creativity and entrepreneurship, you’ll find Tulsa inspiring.

Tulsa feels like a smaller, more affordable version of Austin. You’ll find:

  • A thriving arts district (Tulsa Arts District)
  • Museums like Philbrook Museum of Art and Gilcrease Museum
  • The Tulsa Performing Arts Center, home to the ballet, symphony, and Broadway shows
  • Innovative co-working spaces like 36 Degrees North

9. Annual Events and Festivals

Tulsa has a rich lineup of events that bring the community together:

  • Tulsa Great Raft Race on the Arkansas River
  • Tulsa Mayfest, celebrating local art and music
  • Oklahoma State Fair
  • The Hop Jam, a beer and music festival started by the Hanson brothers
  • Oktoberfest Tulsa, one of the country’s top German festivals
  • Tulsa Tough, a major bike race (don’t miss Cry Baby Hill!)
  • Ironman Triathlon

10. Why Tulsa is Gaining Attention

Over the last few years, Tulsa has attracted national buzz:

  • The Gathering Place, named America’s best new park
  • New Amazon and Macy’s distribution centers, adding thousands of jobs
  • The BMX Olympic Training Facility
  • Finalist for Tesla’s Gigafactory (ultimately awarded to Austin)
  • President Trump’s rally in 2020 put Tulsa in headlines nationwide

These developments show Tulsa is evolving fast, with big investments and a growing national profile.
